His career marked by “spikes-up” slides and relentless battle, Ty Cobb was decidedly unpopular with opponents, fans and often times, his own teammates. Famous, yes, but far from popular. So it stands to reason that Cobb’s endeavor as the spokesperson for candy was short-lived. Such were the factors that make this original 1920s retail box a rarity in many regards. Measuring 4-3/4 x 3-1/2 x 1-1/2”-deep, the sturdy cardboard container has a gold-colored lid which proclaims “EAT THE BEST – TY COBB – A WINNER EVERYWHERE.” Issued by Detroit’s Benjamin Candy Co., the product carried a 5-cent asking price which, like Cobb, could hardly have been appealing to the youngsters of that era. While the lid is affected by a tiny puncture, the vintage piece presents nicely with corners and sides completely intact.
