A rare and prominent Civil War endorsement, this Pierre Beauregard autograph is among the strongest 1860s pennings extant. Executed on an otherwise blank sheet measuring approximately 3-1/8 x 2-3/8”, Beauregard’s black-ink steel tip fountain pen signature is accompanied by his inscription of “Richmond, V Oct. 3rd 1867.” Accented by an exaggerated paraph, Beauregard’s penning projects (“9”) strength and clarity. His Civil war endeavor finished, Beauregard was a railroad executive at the time of this signature and would become one of the few Confederate veterans to prosper after the war. Of note is Beauregard’s “G.T.” (Gustave Toutant) penning, which is consistent with his signatures as he rarely went by “Pierre” as an adult. Full photo LOA from JSA.
