Pre-dating an infamous and very real “curse,” this 1914 document was endorsed by a Boston Red Sox executive whose calculated decisions proved far more beneficial than the endeavors of his ill-fated successor. Specifically, this capital stock certificate is composed for a purchase of 45 shares is dated February 27, 1914 and endorsed on the appropriate line by Red Sox owner Joseph Lannin. Executed in black-ink steel tip fountain pen, Lannin’s regal scripting is minimally affected by an inkblot, yet otherwise shows (“8”) strength and clarity. Lannin became the sole owner of the club that year and purchased the rights to Babe Ruth. After World Series triumphs in 1915 and 1916, Lannin sold the club to theatre agent Harry Frazee (and we all know what ensued). The item has vertical compacting folds and presents nicely.
